Well That Didn't Last Long...

We go through this every year. People overreact in the month of April and into early May about how the baseball season is going. Neither the Yankees or the Red Sox are in first place, the Cubs bullpen will not get anyone out all season, the A’s will win the World Series, and this list goes on. I don’t have anything to support this, but this season feels different. These trends that I listed above and many others did not take long to rebound. The Red Sox are now over 0.500, the Yankees and Cubs are now in first place, the Mariners are now in last place, and the Orioles…well they still suck actually.
We could spend all day talking about all the turnarounds in the league, both good and bad. However, I would like to focus on the Yankees. I can’t lie, I did not see this one coming. With both Stanton and Judge injured, there’s no way I would think they would rebound to first place, especially getting there before the Red Sox. On April 1st, the Yankees were three games below 0.500. As of this article, they are 31-17 with a 2 game lead in their division.
A lot of this has come off the bat of Gelyber Torres. Last night alone, he went 2 for 5 with 2 homers – I know, I know it was against the Orioles. On that note, the Yankees have played the Orioles 11 times already this early season with the Yankees going 9-2 in those games. Torres has gone 20 for 43 with 10 homers and 3 doubles against the Orioles this season. Can you imagine if this guy along with Eloy Jimenez were still on this season's Cubs team instead of being traded?? With only 8 more games against the Orioles the rest of the season, they will need to step it up against better opponents.
Despite all the games against the Orioles this season, you still have to respect what the Yankees are doing. I mean, you could make quite the all-star team with their Injury list. Troy Tulowitzki, Giancarlo Stanton, Luis Severino, Aaron Judge, Didi Gregorius, Jacoby Ellsbury, Greg Bird, and Miguel Andujar. There is NO WAY a team should have all of these stars injured and still work their way back to first place. Again however, this is just another early baseball trend that people should not overreact to and could very well change. But it still impressive and worth writing about.
I'm not at all saying I'm a fan of these guys or they are my World Series pick or even that I think they will win their division when the season ends, however I do think they will be fun to watch against all their odds.
